A gorgeous fairytale wedding in the middle of the Redwoods. A vibrant wedding on the warm beaches of Costa Rica. Nowadays it’s becoming more and more possible and easy to have your wedding in just about any location. I get asked about destination weddings quite often by our bride readers, so I asked destination wedding specialist & planner extraordinaire, Debra of Purple Meadows Events to share with us some of the popular myths out there about destination weddings to show you really can have the wedding of your dreams.
Myth #1: Destination Weddings are for couples who want to escape from everyone. The truth is destination weddings are for everyone. It’s for older couples who are having a second marriage, younger couples who want an intimate celebration, and guests who want to see their love ones tye the knot and get a vacation at the same time!
Myth #2: Destination Weddings are expensive. Some destination weddings are elaborate, but it is possible for budget conscious couples to host their dream wedding in a romantic location other than their hometown. In fact, there are many affordable resorts that offer discounts and packages! Of course, there are things to consider such as the season that you’re hosting your wedding and what other events are happening around that time. Often with a destination wedding, the couple trims their guest list down to an average of 60 guests and it becomes a more intimate wedding.
Myth #2: Destination Weddings are cookie cutter weddings. Maybe years ago destination weddings were simple and less personalized. But those days are long gone. Couples want their weddings styled with personality and uniqueness. They are so many opportunities to personalize your wedding –amazing destination photographers, exotic floral design, unique cultural elements –just the exotic location alone makes your wedding unique.
Myth #3: My family and friends won’t travel. Most people travel these days and are are quite accustomed to traveling across country. Also, many airlines offer direct flights right to your destination which makes it easy and convenient for your guests. You would really be surprised. I planned a destination wedding in Miami last year and every single guest attended from every area of the United States.
Myth #4: Destinations weddings are somewhere faraway on the beach. A destination wedding is having a wedding in a location other than your local area. For example, if you live in Los Angeles and prefer to have your wedding in a vineyard in Napa Valley, that would be a destination wedding. A destination wedding can be in a romantic city, picturesque European town, lovely vineyard along the coast, or lively urban city.
Myth #5: Geez, it’s so difficult to plan a destination wedding that’s faraway. It’s always a good idea to have a wedding planner to work beside you when planning a wedding. The planning process will go a lot smoother, mean less stress for you and you’ll save money. Destination planners have great relationships with resorts and other vendors abroad which enables them to get you great packages and deals that you couldn’t get on you own.
With a destination wedding, you can get more for your money, bond with your guests, and have a vacation all at the same time. So, put on your dream cap, bring in a a destination wedding planner and you can have the wedding of your dreams!
Debra, you are so genuine, motivating, and awesome at what you do. Thanks so much for sharing with us, and I can’t wait to see more of your gorgeous work!
